Scientists are increasingly asked to be meaningful participants in education and outreach activities (which we collectively refer to as "Broader Impacts"). Although some of this activity is initiated by Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) researchers, much of it is in response to funding agency mandates. Few scientists have received any preparation for these types of activities and few know where to look for meaningful assistance.

This planning meeting has as its purpose determining what tools science, math and engineering researchers need, identifying what already exists and what needs to be developed, and the best way to disseminate the information to those who can use it.

The goals of the meeting are:

• Identify existing resources across different disciplines. Participants will contribute information about existing efforts in their discipline that assist researchers in meeting broader impacts requirements. These may be disciplinary conference sessions, or examples of people or institutions that have successfully involved scientists in education and outreach. This information will be compiled in written format and posted on this website.
• Determine what the needs are and whether there are disciplinary issues that require specialized attention. Participants serve as representatives for their disciplinary community. As an education/outreach specialist who works with scientists, or a scientist involved in education and outreach, we will count on your expertise to identify what is missing.
• Determine what type of materials (web, paper or other) are needed to help facilitate meaningful involvement of researchers in education and outreach, the form of those materials and who should be involved in developing them. We will identify what types of tools are most needed, and the form - hard copy, workshop, web, etc. - that these materials would take. These ideas will be developed in the context of existing efforts and the interests of participants.
• Determine appropriate dissemination paths. In coordination with disciplinary society representatives, we will discuss how these materials could be adapted and disseminated by professional societies for their specific discipline, and what the most effective dissemination paths are.
